Lake Mary started as a farming settlement beside the lake that gave it its name and became a city in 1973. Since then it has grown into one of the county's business centers, with corporate campuses along the Interstate 4 corridor and the planned Heathrow community to the west. For visitors, though, the appeal is on a smaller scale: a compact downtown, tree-shaded neighborhoods and easy access to the rest of the county.
The center of town is the area around Central Park, just off Lake Mary Boulevard. A few blocks of restaurants, a terrace overlooking the park and the city's SunRail station sit close together, so you can arrive by train on a weekday, eat lunch and walk around without moving the car. The city stages concerts, a farmers market and seasonal celebrations here, including Holiday in the Park in early December.
Lake Mary Events Center, on Country Club Road, is the city's venue for weddings, dances and community gatherings, and it overlooks the water. The Cross Seminole Trail passes through the eastern side of the city on its way between Winter Springs and the Rinehart Road area, giving cyclists a paved, mostly shaded route that links with longer trails around the county.
Lake Mary works well as a base. Hotels cluster near the interstate, restaurants range from Vietnamese counters to wood-fired seafood rooms, and Sanford's waterfront is ten minutes north. If you are visiting family or working in the area, it is an easy place to spend an evening. On weekend mornings, joggers and cyclists fill the sidewalks around the lakes, and the restaurants near Central Park open their patios once the heat breaks in the fall. Families with children will find playgrounds and splash areas in the city parks, and the quiet residential streets around the lakes are pleasant for a walk at dusk.
